PARIS: Recollections of shifting some 3660 kilometres throughout Australia and fighting homesickness flashed in Alex Saffy’s thoughts as he teared up on the Paralympic pool on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old received a bronze medal and set a brand new Oceanic file within the males’s 100m butterfly S10 on the Paris La Protection Enviornment, then swelled with emotion as he mirrored on a transfer from Bunbury, located about 168 kilometres south of Perth, to Canberra.
He made the transfer at 16 to take up a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and start learning on the College of Canberra as an elite athlete.

The most important life choice culminated in Saffy, who has cerebral palsy, snaring bronze with a 100m butterfly time of 56.61 seconds.
“Did not know anybody [when I moved to Canberra],” he instructed reporters.
“Left my household, went to a brand new college. It was an enormous change, I am completely satisfied it is paid off.
“Homesickness was an enormous one. I really like my household, we’re all so shut. So leaving them was such an enormous sacrifice.
“I’ve actually questioned if every little thing on this sport is value it for me and I’ve doubted it so much, and that medal is such a reduction.”
Italian Stefano Raimondi took gold with a time of 55.02 as Ihor Nimchenko of Ukraine secured silver in 55.21, whereas Australian Col Pearse completed fourth in 57.24.
Saffy’s mum and pa, youthful brother, older sister and a few pals have been within the stands of the Paris La Protection Enviornment cheering on the younger gun.
Though he spent years 11 and 12 in Canberra, he was a scholar at a West Australian college through distance.
“I really like Bunbury,” he mentioned.
“I grew up there and made so many good recollections there.”
He competed on the Birmingham Commonwealth Video games in 2022 and is making his Paralympic debut in France.
“Three years of coaching for me has led to that time [winning Paralympic bronze], so it was very emotional,” Saffy mentioned.
Australia’s Rachael Watson claimed her personal bronze medal in the identical session, ending third within the girls’s 100m freestyle S3.

The 32-year-old clocked 1:38.92 to select up her third Paralympic medal from three Video games, after capturing gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
“I am actually happy with myself,” Watson instructed reporters when requested about gathering her third Paralympic medal.
