Tura, Oct 3: In a sequence of operations to curb unlawful border crossings, atleast 22 unlawful Bangladeshi infiltrators have been apprehend in West Garo Hills in 2 days.
On Thursday morning, Meghalaya Police apprehended 17 Bangladeshi nationals from Sobribari, close to Hallidayganj in West Garo Hills. The arrested people, all hailing from the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh, had been recognized as Sorif Ray, Mizanur Sheikh, Habib Sheikh, Chayan Ray, Sabbir Sheikh, Sohidul Islam, Nahid Sheikh, Sipon Sheikh, Maruf Sheikh, Amin Sheikh, Rojob Ali, Kabir Sheikh, Md Rabiul Islam, Alamgir Sheikh, Sabana Sheikh, and Parul Sheikh.
The apprehended people have been taken into custody for additional questioning.
In a separate operation performed by the Border Safety Power (BSF) on Wednesday, 5 extra Bangladeshi nationals had been apprehended whereas trying to cross the border illegally.
BSF troops stationed close to Dalu in West Garo Hills, noticed suspicious exercise when an auto-rickshaw, carrying 5 people, halted a brief distance from their patrol space. Upon trying to flee, the people had been chased down and arrested by vigilant BSF personnel.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 5 Bangladeshis had been working in a garment manufacturing unit in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and had been trying to illegally return to Bangladesh.
Their plan was thwarted when the BSF intercepted them en path to the border at Purakhasia.
The arrested people had been later handed over to Dalu Police Station for additional authorized proceedings.
